BIOS update for HP notebook, PC sales up in 2019

In the comparison test in c’t 1/2020, we criticized a strange behavior of the Core i7-1065G7 processor used in the HP notebook 14s: Depending on the type of CPU load, it sometimes throttled down considerably, which led to performance drops.

HP notebook gets BIOS update

Only after the editorial deadline did we receive confirmation from HP that the reported behavior of the notebook was not normal. We then sent one of our two purchased and affected copies of the notebook to HP Germany before Christmas; At the same time, HP engineers in the USA went on troubleshooting. A solution in the form of a BIOS update to version F.09 has been available since the beginning of January.

Although the bug we discovered and reported is not mentioned in the public changelog of the BIOS update, it has now been fixed. The notebook achieved 1505 instead of 1384 points in a final measurement in Cinebench R20. In older benchmarks such as Cinebench R11.5, where the performance drops were even more serious, the results were now also on the expected level.

Our follow-up test also revealed further fine-tuning that HP does not mention: The runtime increases to up to 10 hours with the new BIOS version, the fan noise drops to a maximum of 1.8 sons. With this, HP has caught up with its competitors. (mue)

PC sales up after 8 years of dry spell

The past year was positive for hardware manufacturers, as PC sales rose again for the first time since 2011. According to market researchers from Gartner, 261 million new notebooks and desktop PCs were bought. That is an increase of 0.6 percent. IDC also counts workstations and has sold 267 million computers (+2.7 percent).

The demand for business PCs was particularly high. Many companies used the last few weeks and months before Windows 7 support expired on January 14, 2020 to update their equipment pool. The increase would have been even higher if the processor manufacturer Intel had overcome its delivery problems that had persisted for over a year and a half. Demand for consumer devices for private individuals fell slightly year-on-year.

The three big manufacturers Lenovo, HP and Dell, which now make up 65 percent of the PC market among themselves, have benefited from increased sales. Apple, Asus and Acer follow at a considerable distance.

In Europe, PC sales rose 3.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019. According to the market researchers, the main factor here was the switch from Windows 7 to 10. The only exception is the United Kingdom, due to the imponderables of Brexit.

For the next five years, Gartner predicts that the demand for consumer PCs will continue to decline. On the other hand, there should be growth in innovative mobile computers such as foldable notebooks and always-connected devices, which are just as easy to use as smartphones and whose battery life allows you to get through the day.
