Why is OnePlus known as a premium smartphone

The 6 best OnePlus smartphones in 2021

Here you can find the currently best OnePlus smartphones in 2021. OnePlus is best known for its "flagship killers", extremely inexpensive smartphones with which OnePlus initially mixed up the market. The prices of OnePlus have risen in the meantime, but they continue to build flagship killers.

OnePlus has expanded its smartphone portfolio over time. And so you not only get high-end smartphones, but even entry-level and mid-range devices from OnePlus. These mix very well in their respective class, because typically OnePlus, with most smartphones as a customer, you get a lot for your money.

We have put together the best OnePlus smartphones for you and sorted them according to their performance.

These are the best OnePlus smartphones

And these are the OnePlus Phones that have met our strict quality criteria and made it into the ranking:

  1. OnePlus 8 Pro
  2. OnePlus 8T
  3. OnePlus 8
  4. OnePlus NORTH
  5. OnePlus Nord N10 5G
  6. OnePlus Nord N100

The OnePlus 8 Pro is the fastest smartphone in this list, but we recommend the OnePlus 8T for those who want the absolute best price / performance ratio. This is still extremely fast and of high quality, but due to slight savings here and there, it is significantly cheaper than the 8 Pro.

And OnePlus is now also involved in the mid-range. OnePlus has made a real hit with the NORD. If you want to have it even cheaper and not spend more than € 200, then we can recommend the OnePlus Nord N100. There is no cheaper OnePlus smartphone.

By the way: You can find out at the end of this article why we continue to count OnePlus smartphones as stock Android smartphones.

# 1 OnePlus 8 Pro

The best of the best, without compromise, that's what you get with OnePlus 8 Pro. Now also at the flagship price!

No question about it, the price is now higher at an RRP of € 899 than any previous OnePlus smartphone. And yet it offers a better price / performance ratio than a Samsung Galaxy S20 + and all the other flagship phones that haven't gotten any cheaper over the years.

It's not perfect in every category, but it's close everywhere and rightly deserves the title “Pro”.

In the past, OnePlus has always defined itself by the speed of its own smartphones and with the 8 Pro they took it to the extreme, as only the best and fastest hardware was installed.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is the first smartphone from OnePlus to have official IP certification. It is now officially waterproof according to the IP-68 standard!

In addition, the 8 Pro is the first OnePlus phone to have integrated wireless charging. No normal wireless charging, no, it's "fast wireless charging". That means that OnePlus pumps a whopping 30 watts through the air into the battery, madness!

You have to purchase the charger separately, however, as it is not included in the scope of delivery.

In the other areas, OnePlus has usefully expanded or improved its predecessor, the OnePlus 7T Pro:

  • The display is now even larger (approx. 0.1 inches).
  • The AMOLED display now has a refresh rate of 120 Hz (vs. 90 Hz for the 7T and 7T Pro), which makes the smartphone look even smoother when operated.
  • There is now a quad camera with the best Samsung sensors available on the market, making the OnePlus 8 Pro one of the best camera smartphones on the market.
  • The RAM is now DDR5 RAM, which makes the 8 Pro even faster than its OnePlus brothers

As you can see, OnePlus did not mess with the 8 Pro and launched what is probably the most exciting and best stock Android smartphone in 2020!

Per

  • Android 11 with the option of installing Stock Android via a custom ROM
  • Very well made and high quality case
  • 5G modem
  • Very bright, fast and high-resolution 120 Hz AMOLED display with integrated fingerprint sensor
  • Very strong main and front camera (even better than the OnePlus 8)
  • Extremely fast
  • Long battery life thanks to the large battery
  • Waterproof through IP-68 certification
  • Dual SIM

Contra

  • No jack connection
  • No memory expansion possible
  • Price-intensive
OnePlus 8 Pro

Pure performance in the high-end area

The Chinese manufacturer OnePlus combines a 120 Hz display with wireless charging, top camera, excellent workmanship and features in the 8 Pro version. With 5G and a large battery, the device is quite impressive in comparison to Apple and Samsung.

# 2 OnePlus 8T

OnePlus stays true to its tradition with the T series and brings with it too OnePlus 8T again a real price / performance hit on the market.

The top model (the OnePlus 8 Pro) has been slimmed down where it makes sense in order to lower the price and thus achieve a very good price / performance ratio.

For an MSRP of € 599 you get a lot with the OnePlus 8T:

  • The processor or SoC is a Snapdragon 865 with 5G !, so an absolute high-end monster
  • In addition, there is either 8 or even 12 GB of RAM, which together with the Snapdragon is enough for really everything, regardless of whether you play or do other computationally intensive things on your smartphone
  • The sharp, very bright and color-fast display supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz! This is a real announcement for the money!

Of course, there is nothing to complain about with the other components either, but here we are with the standard that a high-end phone should have. By that we mean things like fast UFS storage and a large battery (4500 mAh).

As you can see, this is another great overall package that OnePlus has put together!

Per

  • Android 11 with the option of simply installing Stock Android via a custom ROM
  • 120 Hz AMOLED display with very good colors and very high brightness
  • 5G modem
  • Very high quality case with great colors
  • Endless performance
  • Charged extremely quickly with OnePlus Warp Charge
  • Good battery life
  • Dual SIM
  • Very good price / performance ratio

Contra

  • No jack connection
  • No memory expansion possible
OnePlus 8T

Breathtaking display and unique sight

The battery of the OLED display miracle is charged in 45 minutes. The lightweight smartphone with 8 or 12 GB of RAM and high-end chip is not lacking in performance - the price-performance ratio is right!

# 3 OnePlus 8

The OnePlus 8 is a good improvement of the OnePlus 7T in many areas - for 100 € more. These many improvements lead to a higher price, but still ensure that the OnePlus 8 is a great smartphone with a great price / performance ratio.

The appearance of the OnePlus 8 naturally ensures that the OnePlus 7T moves down in the hierarchy of OnePlus. If you want a cheaper alternative to the OnePlus 8, then go straight to the OnePlus NORD instead of the old 7T.

The changes to the 7T aren't big, but they definitely improve the OnePlus 8 noticeably and justify the higher price. Although the display has remained the same in terms of resolution, aspect ratio and refresh rate (Hertz number), everything else has been improved here and there.

The OnePlus 8 has the following features ahead of the OnePlus 7T:

  • An even better camera that now has a 2 MP macro lens instead of a 12 MP telephoto lens.
  • There is now the option for 12 GB of RAM, which makes the already insanely fast phone even faster.
  • 5G! With the Snapdragon 865, the OnePlus 8 now has an SoC with 5G modem.
  • The battery has been increased by 500 mAh, from 3800 to 4300 mAh. This makes sense because the 5G modems need even more power than LTE or 4G modems.

Verdict - OnePlus 8

The bottom line is that not much has changed compared to the predecessor, but that wasn't necessary either. But now you get a fresh design and meaningful improvements to the technical data plus a 5G modem as a bonus, which means that the OnePlus 8 is now fit for the future.

The OnePlus 8 has a very good display, a long battery life, a strong camera setup and, as always with OnePlus, a very fast Android 10.0, which has been usefully expanded with the OnePlus Oxygen UI.

Per

  • Android 11 with the option of installing Stock Android via a custom ROM
  • Very well made and high quality case
  • 5G modem
  • Very bright 90 Hz AMOLED display with integrated fingerprint sensor
  • Very good main and front camera
  • Extremely fast
  • Long battery life thanks to the large battery
  • Dual SIM

Contra

  • No jack connection
  • No memory expansion possible
OnePlus 8

Great display and immense performance

Despite the 90 Hz full HD display, the OnePlus 8 offers a long battery life. The power and performance is at a very good level and is complemented by a good camera with ultra-wide-angle function.

# 4 OnePlus NORTH

OnePlus is returning to its roots with the NORD and is bringing a real flagship killer that offers everything you want from a high-end smartphone for less than € 400 at the price of a mid-range phone! Awesome, right?

Let that melt on your tongue: Modern design with dual front camera recess in the display, 90 Hz AMOLED display, large 128 GB or 256 GB UFS memory, huge 8 GB or 12 GB RAM, the latest SoC (Snapdragon 765G), large 4115 mAh Battery and a 5G modem. Heart, what do you want more?

With these specifications, the OnePlus NORD can even keep up with the former flagships from the OnePlus 7 series.

You have the choice between a 128 GB and a 256 GB variant for the internal storage. So think carefully about how much memory you need, because with the NORD, as with all OnePlus smartphones, you cannot expand the memory with a microSD card.

With the large model with 256 GB of internal memory, you also get more RAM, namely 12 GB. But since even 8 GB is completely sufficient, actually already too much, you should really only make your choice dependent on the internal memory.

Conclusion - OnePlus NORD

With the OnePlus NORTH OnePlus has returned to its roots and has launched a price / performance winner that is radically calculated in terms of price.

The NORD is in the upper middle class and offers everything you need to get a very fast smartphone for less than € 400 in the 128 GB version.

Let's put it this way: For us, this is a high-end smartphone at the price of a mid-range device! Awesome part, absolute recommendation!

Per

  • Android 10.0 with the option of installing Stock Android via a custom ROM
  • Will be updated to Android 11 by the end of 2020
  • Very well made and chic case with 2 color options
  • Good 90 Hz AMOLED display with integrated fingerprint sensor
  • Very good main camera and front camera. The latter with 2 lenses and 32 MP resolution!
  • Cutting-edge and very fast hardware with integrated 5G modem
  • Fantastic price / performance ratio
  • 5G dual SIM

Contra

  • No fingerprint sensor
  • No memory expansion possible
  • No jack socket
OnePlus NORTH

Stylish, rimless with potent performance

The bright 90 Hz OLED display of the OnePlus Nord ensures good readability even in sunlight. The practical 6.4-inch device is rounded off with a quadruple camera, ultra-wide angle and powerful battery power - practical and convenient!

# 5 OnePlus NORD N10 5G

With the OnePlus NORD N10 5G OnePlus attacks the cheaper middle class. Because in contrast to the normal NORD 5G, the N10 is € 50 cheaper, with slightly stripped-down specifications. Nevertheless, the overall package remains as attractive as we are used to from OnePlus.

For less than € 350 RRP, the N10 5G already has a 90 Hz display, which is a highlight in this price range! Unfortunately, the display is only moderately bright. In contrast to the normal NORD, you have to make the first compromises here.

In addition, it is an LCD display and not an AMOLED, which we do not see as a disadvantage, as it is absolutely a matter of taste, which one would rather have.

Plenty of RAM (6 GB) and fast internal UFS memory (128 GB) are also available in the small NORD N10, but you have to compromise on the SoC and processor. Instead of a Snapdragon 765 from the upper class, the smaller NORD “only” installed a Snapdragon 690.

It comes from the middle class, but is completely sufficient for everything you do with your smartphone these days. The rest of the specifications are almost the same.

The cameras and their photos, something that is very important to many smartphone users nowadays, are unfortunately only mediocre in the OnePlus NORD N10 at the moment. Currentlybecause updates can be made because other phones with the same sensor take better photos.

It is nice for all music lovers that that OnePlus NORD N10 5G has a jack socket. Something that is becoming increasingly rare at OnePlus and many other manufacturers in the upper middle and high end classes.

Since the N10 5G still comes with Android 10, it does not yet have the new OxygenOS interface. This gives you an Android that is really very close to Stock Android.

Per

  • Android 10.0 with the option of installing Stock Android via a custom ROM
  • Update to Android 11 guaranteed by the manufacturer
  • 90 Hz display
  • Lots of RAM (6 GB) and internal storage (128 GB)
  • Enough power for all tasks
  • 5G modem
  • Jack socket
  • Great price / performance ratio
  • Well made case ...

Contra

  • ... which only has a plastic back
  • Only moderately bright display
  • Photo quality of the cameras only mediocre
OnePlus NORD N10 5G

When classic meets modern

In addition to a tried and tested 3.5 mm jack connection, the engineers in Shenzhen are also looking to the future. In addition to the classic virtues, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G also features a modern 5G modem and a high-quality 90 Hz LED display.

# 6 OnePlus Nord N100

The OnePlus Nord N100 is the first smartphone from OnePlus which is available for a price under 200 €. And despite the low price, it has received a real highlight for this price range.

We mean, of course, the modern 90 Hz display, which is / was very rare in entry-level smartphones from 2020 (depending on when you read this).

For this, the N100 had to cut back on the display resolution, because here you "only" get an HD + display, so no full HD resolution as with some other smartphones for less than 200 €.

The large battery with a strong 5000 mAh capacity is nice. That ensures good runtimes. You should get by with the N100 for 2-3 days with normal use without recharging. With intensive use, everyone comes for at least a day.

The rest of the hardware is absolute standard for this price range. USB Type-C connection, jack socket, 64 GB of internal storage (UFS storage. Bravo, OnePlus!) And 4 GB of RAM are completely fine and neither an outlier upwards nor downwards.

But then there is one outlier. We can still accept that the camera on a smartphone for less than € 200 is not the best (others are still better).

But the fact that OnePlus only installs one Snapdragon 460 in the N100 is a real disadvantage. The N100 has problems displaying a stable 60 Hz, how is it supposed to manage the 90 Hz?

OnePlus should have installed either a Snapdragon from the 6 series or a normal 60 Hz display. But the overall package of the OnePlus N100 is unfortunately a bit rough, since other € 200 smartphones are faster these days.

Per

  • Android 10 with the possibility to install Stock Android via a custom ROM (update to Android 11 guaranteed)
  • 90 Hz display
  • Fast internal storage (UFS)
  • Very good battery life thanks to the huge 5000 mAh battery
  • Memory expansion and jack connection (both extremely rare with OnePlus)
  • Dual SIM (hybrid slot, either dual SIM or memory expansion with microSD card)

Contra

  • A smartphone that comes on the market at the end of 2020 can already have Android 11
  • Too slow SoC / processor for this price range
  • Mediocre cameras
OnePlus Nord N100

Inexpensive despite strong features

A 5000 mAh battery paired with 90 Hz and a 6.52 inch display for less than 200 euros? OnePlus creates the compromise and also offers a 13-megapixel camera with autofocus with the N100 - cheap but great!

Why we continue to count OnePlus Phones among stock Android smartphones

OnePlus' manufacturer UI is called Oxygen OS and was mostly based on Stock Android up to Android 11. It is a very slim and fast stock Android, which OnePlus has added a few additional features.

With the appearance of Android 11, OnePlus completely revised its UI. It is now somewhat reminiscent of Samsung's One UI, as you can see here:

As far as the icons are concerned, the homescreen still looks like Stock Android, the rest of the rest for Stock Android fans unfortunately not so much.

But all OnePlus smartphones still have one advantage and that is also the reason why we continue to recommend OnePlus for all fans of pure Android:

OnePlus makes it very easy for users of smartphones to unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM. And this custom ROM can then be, for example, one based on Stock Android (e.g. AOSP). The most famous ROM is still LineageOS today.

Of course, unlocking the bootloader and flashing a ROM is not something for everyone and you have to be technically knowledgeable or know someone who can do it.

But if one of the two is true, you can get a stock Android phone with a lot of performance at an extremely good price at OnePlus with little effort!
