The book deals with meditation methods for people with and without autism. They are used for relaxation, self-discovery and help to increase quality of life and strengthen personal responsibility. The book gives precise tips on how to get started in a practical way.

Ulrike Domenika Bolls, born in 1972, was only diagnosed with Asperger's autism in adulthood. According to her own statements, she deals with self-discovery processes throughout her life. Since 2000 she has been working as a coach for highly sensitive and gifted people with and without autism in her company highmate ©. These personal and professional experiences flow into the book.

Origin background

Even before the diagnosis, the author gained a wide range of experiences in therapies, in different forms of meditation and other self-discovery processes. She herself knows the situation of being overwhelmed and reaching limits. It describes these states as so-called "meltdowns" translated as "core meltdown". Mental breakdowns are meant. From this experience she started looking for suitable methods of relaxation and emotional relief. She found that there is no book specifically for people from the autistic spectrum on this topic. She wants to fill this gap with her book.

The structure includes 30 short headings that illuminate the topic of meditation from different perspectives. The headings are repeated in the running text on every double page so that the reader can orientate himself specifically.

Based on the description of possible prejudices against meditation, the benefits of it are worked out. In the form of checklists, 15 points are compiled that speak for meditation in general and from the point of view of a person from the autistic spectrum in particular. A special focus is on the description of aspects of increasing motivation. This is followed by seven different perspectives in relation to meditation: meditation and emotion, mind, body, soul, animals, God, angels and energies, and mutism.

Relaxation aids for everyday life such as concentration exercises, small breaks, the creation of a connoisseur's box, etc. form the start, plus questions about time, place, duration and necessary environmental factors from the perspective of beginners and advanced users.

Mrs. Bolls knows the feeling of reaching limits. She knows from this experience that people with autism have to take care of their way of processing perception and information to adopt strategies of relief.

Various meditation methods are presented on 132 pages in such a way that they can be used directly in everyday life. The author's style is clear, precise and practical. Your diverse own experiences flow in and make the book authentic.

Mrs. Bolls has been working as a meditation teacher since 1992 and has been meditating for many years. From this experience, she chooses the presentation of existing prejudices as an introduction to the topic and then comes to the benefit to then devote herself to the content-related consideration from seven perspectives.

One of the core areas is the focus on successful meditation. You are successful when you succeed in finding an individually suitable setting, both in terms of the form of meditation and the right choice of framework conditions such as place, time, clothing, music.

The author lets the reader participate in the diverse experiences, whereby both beginners and advanced learners are taken into account. Beginners find access through active forms of meditation that make it easier to focus the mind on the action. In addition to making the right choice, you need sufficient patience and practice so that you can develop the full effect (up to and including self-awareness). Lean periods have to be overcome - here, too, she gives practical tips such as a so-called meditation book in which experiences and the learning process are documented. The recordings help to overcome doubts and to gain insights into one's own development in order to gain new motivation.

Decision-making aids form a core of the book, in which the author combines typical aspie characteristics with nine forms of meditation and gives specific tips on how to use them.

She mentions the following characteristics: switching off problems, attention to detail, ritualized processes, movements, turning, problems with movement / body coordination, repeating words, humming, mutism, visual imagination and artistic.

For each form, the process is presented, which it characterizes using key words. These are:

  1. Dynamic meditation according to Osho
  2. Whirling to Osho
  3. Walking meditations
  4. Nadrabrahama meditations according to Osho
  5. Mindfulness Meditation (Vipassana)
  6. Mantra meditation
  7. Sitting quietly after Zasen
  8. Koan meditation
  9. Paint mandalas

Mrs. Bolls has succeeded in illuminating the extensive topic of meditation in a compact and clearly understandable manner on only 132 pages. She wrote the book in the you-form, as if she were in conversation with the reader. This form takes getting used to at the beginning. Over time, this style makes it increasingly clear that the reader is being addressed directly. This stylistic means asks you to relate the presented content to yourself and to gather your own experiences / knowledge. The author's concise style is tailored to aspies, but also non-autists, so-called neurotypical -NTs, benefit from the practical information and the brevity of the presentation. Important information was worked out and unnecessary information was omitted.

Meditations are a suitable form of relaxation for aspies, because they offer what aspies need: fixed processes and fixed locations, predictability, a ritual through which one comes to rest, catches one's thoughts, etc. Exactly these criteria are also helpful for NTs .

It should be noted to the author that she has both a lot of specialist knowledge and a wealth of own experience in the application of meditations. She managed to formulate succinctly without becoming superficial or imprecise.

The book (according to the author unique in relation to the group of people from the autistic spectrum) presents a selection of methods for meditation without any ideological background. It is Mrs. Bolls succeeded in presenting the topic in a wonderfully easy way.

The waiver of technical language (except proper names) and complex instructions makes it easier to get started. The reader learns that it is not difficult to learn forms of relaxation and meditation and to use them in everyday life to compensate for stressful situations.
