What is the Bachelor of Engineering?

The Bachelor of Engineering is one of a total of eight degrees with which you can complete your Bachelor's degree after a standard study period of 6 to 7 semesters. It is considered to be the equivalent of the old diploma degrees from universities of applied sciences in engineering and technical subjects. The subjects that lead to a Bachelor of Engineering include, for example:

The academic degree of Bachelor of Engineering not only qualifies you for the job, but also for a subsequent Master’s degree and even for a doctorate. The consecutive Master’s degree builds on the Bachelor’s degree and is intended to deepen and supplement the material taught there. With a non-consecutive degree program, you can, for example, complete a Master of Science. The master’s degree usually lasts another 4 semesters.

You can complete a Bachelor of Engineering degree at universities, technical colleges, private colleges, distance learning or as a dual degree. The course is possible both full-time and part-time. At universities, the teaching content of a Bachelor of Engineering is usually more theoretical, while universities of applied sciences place more emphasis on practical application.

Course of studies and content

As with all Bachelor courses, you will take various modules and collect credit points in the Bachelor of Engineering course. The so-called practical work phase usually complements this structure. You will usually complete it in the 5th semester in the form of a 12-week internship during the lecture-free period. In the 6th semester you will finish your bachelor thesis. If an internship is stipulated in your curriculum, the study period can be extended to 7 semesters.

Bachelor of Engineering degree programs initially provide you with basic knowledge in the following areas:

  • mathematics
  • Natural sciences
  • technology
  • production
  • management
  • Commercial law

You can then specialize in the following areas, for example, within the subject area you have chosen:

  • Building materials engineering
  • Construction management
  • Energy Technology
  • environmental engineering
  • Mechatronics
  • mechanical engineering
  • Electrical and communications engineering
  • Supply chain management
  • development and construction
  • Production optimization
  • Information Science

Many of these areas of study have their own courses, such as the Bachelor of Engineering and Information Science.

Requirements for a Bachelor of Engineering degree

The admission requirements may vary depending on the university. If you are aiming for a degree with a Bachelor of Engineering degree, you usually need the Abitur, the subject-related higher education entrance qualification or the technical college entrance qualification. In addition, technical understanding and logical thinking skills as well as good English, mathematics and PC skills are prerequisites for a corresponding degree. Creativity is also required when you have to apply different theories or methods. At universities of applied sciences, for example, professionally qualified people with a master's degree can study without a high school diploma.

At many universities and technical colleges you have to pass an entrance exam in addition to your application. In this way, you demonstrate your previous knowledge and your suitability for an engineering or technical degree. In addition, you can expect further admission restrictions, such as an NC procedure.

You can complete the Bachelor of Engineering degree full-time or part-time while working. One option for part-time studies is distance learning or evening studies. An alternative is the dual course of study integrated into training. In addition to your studies, you will complete an apprenticeship and will have two degrees at the end.

Career prospects for the Bachelor of Engineering

A degree program with a Bachelor of Engineering degree usually prepares you for a very different field of activity. You are involved in development and production processes, maintain machines, calculate costs, monitor purchasing and sales or develop new processes.

With a Bachelor of Engineering degree, the job market offers you good career prospects. Even if we can no longer speak of a general shortage of skilled workers, there is currently a lack of creative minds with a university degree, especially in electrical engineering or in vehicle and mechanical engineering. Many companies send their HR managers to universities and advertise internships and trainee positions in their company directly to students.

Differences between the Bachelor of Engineering and the Bachelor of Science

Some universities award a Bachelor of Science degree for science and technology courses, while others award a Bachelor of Engineering degree for the same course. Many of the technical courses, such as engineering, can therefore also be completed with a Bachelor of Science. Basically, the content of a degree program determines the type of degree.

Courses leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree are often offered by vocational academies and universities of applied sciences that are characterized by practice-oriented teaching. Universities and technical colleges, on the other hand, place more value on science and research and usually award a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.
