What premium fuels are and what they can do
According to the mineral oil companies, premium fuels ensure more performance, less consumption and quieter engines. But what's in V-Power, Ultimate and Co.? And can they keep what advertising and marketing promises?
At many petrol stations the same picture: You can no longer only choose between gasoline and diesel (depending on the engine), but the mineral oil companies now offer a variety of fuels. Their octane numbers are different, as are the names, but above all the prices. But which fuel is suitable for whom and what is in the premium fuels with promising-sounding names such as MaxxMotion, Synergy, Ultimate or V-Power? And can they really keep the promises that marketing and advertising make?
The higher octane numbers of 100 in premium fuels (simple SuperPlus petrol has an octane rating of 98) offer higher knock resistance. As a result, there is less auto-ignition of the fuel. That in turn should have a positive effect on performance and consumption. In reality, however, the engines in our cars are designed for a maximum of 98 octane. So most of them cannot exploit the potential of 100-octane fuel at all. Cleaning and other additives are also often added to the expensive types. But whether these actually have a positive effect is extremely difficult to verify, and the effect is probably rather small in reality.
In Germany, the minimum requirements for fuel quality are regulated by law. Accordingly, fuels may only be offered if they comply with the relevant standards; e.g. DIN EN 228 for petrol and DIN EN 590 for diesel fuels. These fuels are suitable for normal use. Vehicle manufacturers do not generally expect or prescribe better fuel.
Premium fuels often get confused at the pumps
What is clear and evident, however, is the pricing of premium fuels: a difference of up to 20 cents to conventional diesel or super is not uncommon. The premium fuels do not harm the engines, but on the one hand the advertised positive effect is difficult to verify, on the other hand it is also rather unlikely in everyday cars, since the Golf, Corsa or Mini are designed for the daily commute to work and not for the fastest lap on the Hockenheimring. But if you want to do something good for your car with the expensive fuel, you are not doing anything wrong.
On the other hand, the increasing confusion at the petrol stations is problematic. Because of the increasing number of taps with ever new names, drivers have to check carefully which fuel actually needs to be in the car before refueling. For example, MaxxMotion or V-Power can be gasoline or diesel.
